The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, on Monday, said attacks on police officers on official duties will no longer be tolerated. He also ordered all police commands and formations to ensure immediate prosecution of anyone who assaults policemen regardless of the causative factors. This was contained in a statement signed on Monday by Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi. The statement partly read, “The IGP emphasized that attacks on police officers, who are uniformed agents of the state, is both illegal and an affront on the rule of law. “The IGP warned that attacks on police officers and men in the line of duty would no longer be tolerated under whatever guise, as the Force holds the lives of its personnel sacrosanct. “Consequently, the IGP has directed all police commands and formations to ensure that individuals who engage in assault on police officers, irrespective of preceding factors, are made to face the full wrath of the law via swift prosecution in court

Finance, Budget and National Planning Minister, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed Ahead of the 2023 budget presentation, the Federal Government on Monday reiterated petrol subsidy will remain in place until mid-2023. According to the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, the government is proposing to spend only N3.36 trillion for petrol subsidy in 2023. She made the comment while meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Finance in Abuja on the details of the 2023-2025 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper. The minister added that the Federal Government is proposing an aggregate expenditure of N19.76 trillion for the 2023 financial year, with a projected deficit of N11.30 trillion. According to Mrs Zainab, the Federal Government is projecting the total revenue of N8.46 trillion, out of which N1.9 trillion is expected to come from oil-related sources while the remaining is to come from non-oil sources. Management of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc has resolved to significantly reduce the importation of sugar into the country by 40 percent, thus paving the way for the employment of over 30,000 youths. President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote explained recently in a chat with newsmen that it was embarking on Phase II of its Sugar project, which will then cover over 100,000ha to make the sugar plant, the largest in Africa. Dangote said that the integrated sugar complex to be located in Tunga, Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, comprises 60,000ha sugar plantation and two sugar factories with the capacity to produce 430,000 tonnes of refined white sugar per annum. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has resolved to extend its ongoing six-month strike to indefinite strike action. The indefinite industrial action begins from 12.01 a.m. on Monday, 29th August 2022. This was made known in a statement signed by the ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, after the meeting of the National Executive Council was held in Abuja. The National Executive Council of ASUU concluded that the demands of the Union had not been satisfactorily addressed hence the declaration for a total comprehensive and indefinite strike. According to the Union, the strike is aimed at saving public universities. “In view of the foregoing, and following extensive deliberations on Government’s response to the resolution of 14th February, 2022 so far, NEC concluded that the demands of the Union had not been satisfactorily addressed. Consequently, NEC resolved to transmute the roll-over strike to a comprehensive, total and indefinite strike action beginning from 12.01a.m.

NDLEA Operatives Arrest Lagos Airport Cleaner Who Leads Drug Syndicate

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have arrested a cleaner at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Ikeja Lagos, Ohiagu Sunday, who leads a drug syndicate at the international wing of the airport. NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi in a statement on Sunday, said the suspect was nabbed on Tuesday 23rd August following the arrest of an intending passenger on Airpeace flight to Dubai, UAE, Obinna Jacob Osita who was arrested with three bags, two of which contained eight blocks of cannabis sativa weighing 4.25kg concealed in cassava product, garri and crayfish. One other member of the airport syndicate who works with Ohiagu has also been arrested while operatives are after another suspect. Investigations revealed that a Dubai-based drug dealer recruited Obinna, a 42-year-old native of Oyi Local Government Area, Anambra State to traffic the drugs and equally contracted Ohiagu, a 34-year-old airport cleaner from Orlu West Local Government Area of Imo St

Flood Displaces Thousands In Jigawa Community

Thousands of people have been displaced after a heavy downpour that lasted for hours in Karnaya village, Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State. One of the community leaders, Bala Adamu, confirmed the development to newsmen, saying over 500 houses have been destroyed, with many livestock lost. According to him, people now may have to seek shelter at filling stations and the schools in the community. “The flood began around 11 pm yesterday. We all came out to save what we can. Over five hundred houses have been affected. Now our people are taking refuge at a school and some filling stations that are not affected, but they can’t contain us.” he said. The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is meeting to review its six-month-old strike. Sunday’s meeting started in the evening and the union, which has been involved in a protracted industrial dispute, is expected to make a decision about the strike. Despite several meetings between the Federal Government and members of the union, ASUU has not backed down on its demands. Two weeks ago, a meeting between the government and ASUU ended in a deadlock. The varsity teachers met with the Professor Nimi Briggs Committee at the National University Commission in Abuja. While they were hopeful of a positive outcome, a senior member of the union told Channels Television that the Briggs renegotiation committee did not come up with a new offer.
