Gunmen Abduct 25 Travellers In Ondo

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted 25 travellers along the Owo/Ifon/Benin Expressway in Ondo State. INFORMATION NIGERIA reports that the victims were traveling ‎to Ifon, in Ose local government area of the state, for a burial ceremony and were stopped by the kidnappers who whisked them away. According to a source in an interview with Leadership Newspaper, explained that the victims were members of the Oke Igan branch of CAC in Akure, who were traveling with the church vehicle. The source who confirmed that about two members of her family were among the kidnapped members of the church said there was no news from the victims. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s appeal against the release of his academic records conflicts with his “impeccable” public declarations. Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the PDP, had approached the United States (US) District Court for the Northern District of Illinois to produce relevant documents showing academic information of Tinubu who claimed to have attended the Chicago State University (CSU). Food Prices In Nigeria Record 31% Rise – NBS

Ebonyi and Abia states led as food prices jumped by 31 per cent within in 12 months from July 2022 to July 2023. This is according to an analysis of the ‘Selected Food Price Watch,’ a report published on a monthly basis by the National Bureau of Statistics. The selected food items include staples such as rice(1kg), beans(1kg), bread (500g), tomatoes, beef, wheat (2kg), garri(1kg) and palm oil (1 bottle). According to a report by BusinessDay, the loans are for education ($700 million), power ($750 million), and women empowerment ($500 million). Data from the Debt Management Office showed Nigeria’s total public debt has increased to N87.37 trillion at the end of June 2023. This represents a 103.93% year-on-year increase compared to N42.84 trillion in Nigeria’s public debt as of June 2022. The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), on Wednesday, announced that it successfully destroyed hideouts of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Anambra and Imo States. According to Edward Gabkwet, NAF’s spokesperson, the strikes took place on Tuesday at Mother Valley Orsumughu in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra and Aku Ihube in Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo. INEC Fixes Dates For Edo, Ondo Guber Polls The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday, announced fixed dates for the off-cycle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states. Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, of the Information and Voter Education Committee, said in Abuja that the tenure of the governors of Edo and Ondo states will end on November 11th, 2024, and February 23rd, 2025 respectively. He said while the governorship election will be held on September 21, 2024, in Edo State; it will be held on November 16, 2024, in Ondo State. “As provided in Section 178 (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), election into the said offices shall be held not earlier than 150 days and not later than 30 days before the expiration of the tenure of the last holder of the office. “The latest date for election to the office of governor, Edo State, is 12th October 2024 while that of Ondo State is 24th January 2025

FG Approves 25% Pay Rise For Lecturers In Federal Varsities

The Federal Government has approved the implementation of a 25 percent pay rise for lecturers in all federal institutions. Information Nigeria understands that the government had earlier objected to the payment of 25 percent to lecturers in the tertiary institutions when it raised that of Professors to 35 percent. However, in a September 21 circular, issued by the office of the Auditor General (AG) of the Federation to Polytechnics and Colleges of Education, the AG noted that the implementation was approved by the Presidential Committee on Salaries at its 13th meeting. The decision was taken after “ taking into consideration, various stages of collective bargaining,” the circular stated. The circular was sequel to a similar letter from the Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission( NSIWC), dated September 14, 2023. President Bola Tinubu has reportedly filed an emergency application seeking a review of the judgement that ordered the release of his academic records to Atiku Abubakar, Peoples Gazette reports. Recall that Judge Jeffrey Gilbert of the United States District Court had on September 19 ordered Chicago State University to release Mr Tinubu’s records to his Nigerian political opponent as part of an ongoing election challenge proceeding in Nigeria. The judge said the records must be turned over to Mr Abubakar on September 21. He also said school administrators must submit themselves to certify all released records under oath. Peter Obi Appeals Against Tribunal’s Verdict, Submits 51 Grounds To Supreme Court

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has filed an appeal at the Supreme Court seeking to overturn the judgement of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) affirming Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s emergence as President. Recall that his counterpart, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, filed his appeal to challenge the PEPC’s verdict delivered on 6 September. In his notice of appeal dated 19 September, Obi’s lead counsel, Livy Uzoukwu, predicated his client’s appeal to the Supreme Court on 51 grounds. Uzoukwu, in one of the grounds, told the Supreme Court that the five-member panel of the Presidential Election Petition Court led by Haruna Tsammani “erred in law and thereby reached a wrong conclusion” when it dismissed Obi’s suit.
