Russia Cuts Gas Supply To Poland, Bulgaria

Image
Russia halted gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria on Wednesday, after blasts in a breakaway region of neighbouring Moldova led Kyiv to accuse Moscow of seeking to expand the Ukraine war further into Europe. The Russian energy giant Gazprom said it had cut supplies to Poland and Bulgaria, in Moscow’s latest use of gas as a weapon in a conflict that has now dragged into its third month and claimed thousands of lives. Explosions this week targeting the state security ministry, a radio tower and military unit in neighbouring Moldova’s region of Transnistria — occupied by Moscow’s forces for decades — followed a Kremlin commander’s claims Russian speakers in the country were being oppressed. That triggered alarm that Moldova could be Russia’s next target in its push into Europe, with Moscow having exploited similar fears after launching its bloody invasion of Ukraine on February 24. “Russia wants to destabilise the Transnistrian region,” Mykhaylo Podolyak, a Ukraine presidential aide,

Man City Beat Real Madrid In Seven-Goal Champions League Classic

Image
Manchester City have a slender lead to defend in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid after winning a thrilling first leg 4-3 at the Etihad on Tuesday. The English champions could live to regret not killing off the 13-time winners after taking a two-goal lead three times. Kevin De Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva were on target for Pep Guardiola’s men, who should have scored many more. But Karim Benzema’s double and a brilliant individual effort from Vinicius Junior gave Madrid hope of another famous Champions League fightback at the Santiago Bernabeu on May 4. Guardiola lamented letting Liverpool escape “alive” in the Premier League title race after a 2-2 draw at the Etihad nine days ago and will have similar regrets after a blistering opening that could have seen City go 4-0 up inside half an hour. Madrid were playing in their 30th semi-final to City’s third, but the English giants lived up to their tag as pre-tie favourite

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the lawmaker representing Imo West senatorial district in the National Assembly, said the problem with Africa’s most populous country is the lack of wealth. Rather than roll out a series of points, the ex-Imo State governor said his only agenda is to create wealth just as other advanced nations of the world have empowered their citizens. “The budget of New York is over $100 billion in 2021 while the budget of Nigeria is only $29 billion, four times bigger than Nigeria. I am talking about New York, a city in America, and so also in Japan. What is the difference, they have created wealth,” he said. “This wealth is here in this country which has not been created. So my agenda is to create wealth. When people come to tell you that per capita income, unemployment rate, death rate, ins

China Detects First Human Case Of H3N8 Bird Flu

China has confirmed the first known human case of the H3N8 strain of avian flu, but health authorities say there is a low risk of widespread transmission among people. H3N8 is known to have been circulating since 2002 after first emerging in North American waterfowl. It is known to infect horses, dogs, and seals, but has not previously been detected in humans. China’s National Health Commission on Tuesday said a four-year-old boy living in central Henan province tested positive for the strain after being hospitalised earlier this month with a fever and other symptoms. The boy’s family raised chickens at home and lived in an area populated by wild ducks, the NHC said in a statement. The boy was infected directly by birds and the strain was not found to have “the ability to effectively infect humans”, the commission said. It added that tests of the boy’s close human contacts found “no abnormalities”. The NHC said the boy’s case was a “one-off cross-species transmission, and the ri
