Poverty Reduction: FG Disburses N20,000 Grant To 2,900 Persons In Abuja

Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouq The Federal Government has disbursed a one-off grant of N20,000 to 2,900 poor and vulnerable persons in the Federal Capital Territory. Addressing journalists after the flag-off ceremony in Abuja, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq, said the Vulnerable Group Programme is an expansion of the National Social Investment Scheme. The scheme’s goal is to help lift one million Nigerians out of poverty by 2030. A 39-Year-Old Nigerian man, Alika Ogorchukwu, has been beaten to death in Civitanova Marche city in the Province of Macerata, Marche Region of Italy. Bandits on Thursday evening reportedly engaged the military in a gun duel at a checkpoint in Zuma Rock Madalla, along the Kaduna-Abuja highway. It is not yet clear if there were any casualties. A heavy-duty truck involved in a lone accident has blocked a major road in Lagos, authorities of the agency managing emergencies in the state have said. The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed this in a statement on Friday. Narrating how the crash took place, Oke-Osanyintolu who did not state the time of the incident said it occurred on the inward section of the Palmgrove – Obanikoro end along the poplar Ikorodu Road. He added that the agency swiftly deployed a team of responders to the scene where it was discovered that the truck conveying two payloaders was the only vehicle involved in the accident. Ahmed Idris Justice Adeyemi Ajayi of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, has fixed Thursday 28 July for Ruling on the bail application of the Former Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris and four others. At the resumed sitting on Wednesday, Counsel to Mr Idris, Chris Uche prayed the court to admit the defendant to bail in liberal terms as the alleged offenses are bailable. Opposing the bail application counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Rotimi Jacobs held that the court should look at the gravity of the alleged offenses to refuse bail. Jacobs also said he is ready to close the case in one week as he has about 10 witnesses. Insecurity: FG Sued Over Continued Existence Of NYSC Scheme

The director-general of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has been sued before a Federal High Court in Abuja, over the continued existence of the scheme. In the suit, the plaintiff, Okomayin Ude, prayed the court for an order, that the continued sustenance of National Youth Service Corps Act, 1993 and the mandatory posting of Nigerian youths to states prone to insurgency and ravaged by banditry, is a breach of the right of the youths to security of life and dignity as guaranteed by Sections 33 and 34 of the 1999 as amended. He also prayed for an order of injunction restraining President Buhari from assenting to the National Youth Service Corps Trust Fund Act, Bill, 2022 as proposed by the National Assembly. A bank cash officer and an armed robber were killed on Tuesday in a bullion van attack, police authorities in Abia State have said. The incident occurred at about 1:13pm at Ntigha junction along the Port Harcourt – Enugu Highway in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of the state. Mr Geoffrey Ogbonna, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, confirmed the incident in a statement in Umuahia, the state capital. The bullion van, which was escorted by six policemen, was conveying cash from a commercial bank in Aba to Umuahia when it ran into an ambush by armed robbers. The operatives providing security for the vehicle are “attached to 28 PMF Umuahia and Counter Terrorist Unit Base,” Ogbonna stated. T he dollar crashed on Wednesday to between N705 and N707 at the parallel market over increasing scarcity of the foreign exchange (forex), according to observations in Abuja. The official CBN rate of a dollar at the import and export window also slightly increased on Tuesday to N416.14 from the N415.79 obtainable on Monday. Some Bureau De Change (BDC) operators in Abuja yesterday said there was more rush for the foreign exchange currency, especially by business people, most of whom had found it difficult getting dollar through the bank process and the CBN’s I&E window. The N707 to a dollar benchmark is a marked 7 per cent or N40 increase from the N650 it traded last week with some operators saying since the scarcity persisted from 2021, BDCs no longer comply with previous CBN rule of a N3 profit margin. Speaker of the House of Assembly, Joseph Kunini, raised the alarm on the floor of the House, yesterday, in a motion under matter of public importance. The Lagos State Government has re-arraigned an on-air personality, Mr Uche Igwe, popularly known as Darksam, for allegedly sharing the sex tape video of a Chrisland School student on social media. Igwe, aged 40, was re-arraigned on Tuesday before a Magistrate Court sitting in the Yaba area of Lagos on a fresh one-count charge. The defendant was earlier arraigned in May, this year by the Nigerian Police on a two-count charge of cyberstalking and breach of peace to which he pleaded not guilty. The Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP), through its counsel, Omolola Saliu, re-arraigned the defendant on a fresh one-count charge before Chief Magistrate Adeola Adedayo.
