Telecoms Workers Accuse Huawei Of Anti-Labour Practices, Threaten Three Days Warning Strike

The Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PTECSSAN) has issued a three-day warning strike notice to a global tech brand, popularly known as Huawei Technologies Company Limited, for alleged anti-labour practices. According to PTECSSAN’s general secretary, Okonu Abdullahi, in a letter written to the company, said that the union had directed the withdrawal of services of its members from projects of the company, effective between midnight on May 2 and 11:59 p.m. on May 4, 2023. Mr Abdullahi made this known today in Lagos, said that failure of the company to comply with the union’s demands after the warning strike would result in an indefinite strike. ‘’We were constrained to embark on this industrial action when it became apparent to us that your company is not labour-friendly and is not interested in peaceful and amicable resolutions of the concerns of our members. Raising the alarm, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) expressed concern that years of armed conflict in northeast Nigeria is driving hunger and malnutrition, with millions in need of life-saving assistance and facing the risk of famine. Sudan: Outcry On $1.2m For Buses To Evacuate Nigerians Uncalled For, Sheer Ignorance – FG

The Federal Government has reacted to the public outcry in some quarters over the exorbitant rate it had to pay for the buses hired to evacuate Nigerians from Sudan to Egypt owing to the ongoing conflict in the Sudan. The government in a joint statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development (FMHADMSD) on Saturday explained that it paid the sum of $1.2 million to hire the buses because negotiations were done in a condition of war and there were competing demands for the same buses from other countries. Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, has said the incessant gridlock at the Kara end of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway will end on Sunday, April 30, 2023. 10 Dead, Others Injured As Petrol Tanker Catches Fire In Jos

A petrol-laden truck on Thursday afternoon reportedly caught fire at the Bauchi junction, Farin Gada axis Jos North local government area of Plateau State killing about 10 people while many others sustained various degrees of injuries. Among the injured were some personnel of the Federal Road Road Safety Corps (FRSC), motorists, pedestrians, and business people who were in the busy vicinity at the time of the incident. FG To Spend $1.2m On 40 Buses To Evacuate Stranded Nigerians From Sudan

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffery Onyeama, says the Federal Government will be spending $1.2 million to purchase 40 luxurious buses to be used for the evacuation of Nigerians trapped in Sudan. Onyeama disclosed this while speaking to state house correspondents after the Federal Executive Council meeting. Onyeama said the FG will evacuate citizens within days despite the 72-hour ceasefire agreement in Sudan. The minister said the high cost of the evacuation was to provide security cover for the Nigerians’ journey to the Egyptian borders. “The sum of $1.2 million is what we’re being charged for all the 40 buses. This was confirmed in a text message sent to customers on Tuesday, that the new rates will take effect on May 1, 2023. The pay-tv firm said the price adjustment was due to the rising costs of business operations. Public primary and secondary schools in Akwa Ibom State were on Tuesday shut, as teachers resumed strike action over ‘outstanding indebtedness’ owed them by the State government. The Senior Assistant Secretary-General of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Sam Umo-Inyang, revealed this in a circular dated April 20, 2023 The circular, titled ‘Resumption of strike action’ read: “I am directed to inform you and you are hereby informed that the state wing, Executive Council of NUT, which comprises representatives of teachers from the 31 local government areas of the state has approved the resumption of strike action, which started in March 2022, but suspended due to personal intervention of Governor Udom Emmanuel. The strike action takes effect from April 25, 2023. Meat Seller Slumps, Dies On Duty In Lagos

No reason has been given behind the death of a yet to be identified male meat seller who slumped and died while attending to a customer on Branco Street, in the Mafoluku area of Lagos State. It was gathered that the incident happened on Monday around 5pm when the deceased was attending to a customer in the community. According to an eyewitness who identified himself simply as Tunde, the deceased had finished selling the meat and was waiting for payment when he suddenly slumped. He said, “The man is a regular meat hawker in this area and he was hawking along the street as usual when a woman called him to sell meat for her. When he got to the woman’s place, he brought down his meat and negotiation went on for a while. He later sold the meat to her when they both reached an agreement. “It was at the point when the woman was about to pay him that he suddenly fell to the ground. Zamfara State governor, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, has approved the reinstatement of Aliyu Maraca, to the throne of Emir of Birnin Yandoto.
